The candidate judged to be the most outstanding will receive the JACL-Sakata Memorial Plaque.

 

I. ELIGIBILITY: A candidate must meet one of the following:

1) A graduating high school senior residing in the Denver Metropolitan Area who is either an American citizen of Japanese ancestry or an American Citizen whose legal parent is of Japanese ancestry, or

2) A graduating high school senior of Japanese ancestry residing in the Denver Metropolitan Area who has permanent residence status (INS documentation) in the United States, or

3) A graduating high school senior who has a parent who is an active member of: Mile-Hi Japanese American Citizen League, Simpson United Methodist Church, Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples, Denver Nisei Bowling Association, Brighton Japanese American Association, Japanese Association of Colorado, Nisei Veterans Heritage Foundation or Fort Lupton Japanese American Citizen League.

II. JUDGING: The final decision of the judges is based upon grade point average, academic courses, school activities, community participation, leadership, personal essay and the oral interview. The applicant must be available in person for an oral interview on Saturday, May 9, 2009. The interviews will be held in the Denver metropolitan area.

III. Required Forms: The following must be submitted to apply for Community Committee Awards:

  1. Completed Community Scholarship Application Form
  2. Transcript of high school grades (certified by a high school official)
  3. One or more letters of attestation of volunteerism.
  4. Typed essay answering the following questions:

The essay question consists of two questions with a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1000 word for the essay.  Both parts must be completed in order to receive credit on the application.

  1. During World War II, Japanese Americans were denied their constitutional freedoms and fought to regain them.  As a member of the Japanese American community today, how can you uphold their legacy by ensuring civic liberties and freedoms for all?
  2. Within the next 10 years, describe the impact you will have on your Japanese American community.

 

All of the above listed documents (4) are required to qualify for the judging process.  Any packet missing any of these documents will be disqualified from the judging process.

IV. DeadlineALL MATERIAL MUST BE POSTMARKED ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2009.

There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this deadline. Certificate of mailing from the post office is required. Hand delivered applications will not be accepted. Transcripts may be sent under a separate cover (no certificate of mailing required for transcript only).  However, transcript must be received by April 10, 2009 to be eligible.
